The following pages show how energy flow and nutrient cycling function in different natural and semi-natural landscapes. 
 
Since photosynthesis is the primary process which introduces energy into the ecosystem, this work is closely associated with vegetation succession and the role of  different plants (and some bacteria) as primary producers. All other organisms exist at various lower (down-stream!) trophic levels and may be considered consumers.
 
The first two ecosystems are upland moorland and industrially derelict land. For tragically different reasons the landscapes of conflict left by WW1 in Europe have many similarities with these. The results of initial studies of the soils and vegetation on the Verdun and other WW1 battlefields look at these similarities and possibilities for their rehabilitation.
